Letter from Mrs. Goodin Concerning Classroom Snacks/Treats – Please Read

Dr. Melin has asked that we remind our families of the Greater Clark County Wellness Policy 5140.  This policy outlines the nutritional guidelines for Greater Clark to stay in compliance with federal standards; Federal Law 108-265.   Within this policy there are to be no competitive (fast) foods or carbonated beverages during the school day; this includes lunch times.  The policy also states that celebrations are limited to two per year with healthy food options.  Foods should follow the Smart Snack in Schools USDA standards.  Please note that this does impact birthday celebrations.  We realize birthdays are a special time of the year and we would still like to celebrate with our students.  It would be appropriate for snacks meeting the USDA smart snacks in schools to be used as a birthday treat.

Please see the attached information regarding USDA Smart snacks information.  You can also visit their website at http://www.regulations.gov.  The Greater Clark Wellness Policy 5140 can be accessed through the GCCS website under school board policy and bylaws.
